Do Boracay Hotels Have Backup Generators? What Is Stated and What to Ask

In brief

Most Boracay hotels do not say on their own websites whether they have a backup generator, so the reliable way to find out is to ask the property before you book. The three hotel pages opened for this article do not mention a generator, while the island’s two large 2025 blackouts lasted at least 18 hours and about two days.

  • Hotel pages: La Carmela de Boracay, Henann Crystal Sands and Mövenpick Resort & Spa do not mention a generator, backup power or Wi-Fi speed in the page text345.
  • Older news: during scheduled brownouts in September 2019, resort and hotel managers were reported to be “using generator sets”6.
  • Outage length: at least 18 hours in May 2025 and about two days in September 202512.
  • Booking sites, guest reviews and host-written listings are not used here as evidence of backup power.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Boracay hotels have generators?

Some report using them. A 2019 news report says resort and hotel managers ran generator sets during scheduled brownouts6. The three hotel pages opened for this article do not say either way345.

Do Boracay hotel websites say whether they have a generator?

The three opened here do not345. Search the page for “generator” or “backup power”, and ask the property if the word is missing.

How long do Boracay power outages last?

The 2025 blackouts lasted at least 18 hours in May and about two days in September12. The dated list is in the outage timeline.

Will a generator keep the air conditioning and Wi-Fi on?

It depends on what the property connects to it. None of the pages opened states this, so ask question 3 above.

Can I rely on guest reviews for generator information?

Not as a fact. Reviews describe one guest’s stay on one date. Use them to decide what to ask, then ask the property.

The detail

A generator is only useful if it starts, runs the things you need and has fuel for the length of the outage. This page reports what a few properties say about themselves, what news says about hotels and generators, and what to ask. It gives no ranked list, because the evidence does not support one. For the outages that make the question relevant, see Boracay power outages in 2025 and 2026; for how the island is supplied, see How Boracay gets its electricity.

The short answer

If you are… Do this
Booking a hotel and want to know about backup power Message the property with the four questions below and keep the reply
Reading a hotel’s website for a generator Search the page for “generator”, “genset”, “standby power” and “backup power”; if absent, the page does not say
Relying on a guest review or listing text Treat it as a lead to confirm with the property, not as a fact
Working online during your stay Ask about Wi-Fi under backup power too; see remote work on Boracay

What three properties' own pages state

The site earns a commission on some hotel links, which does not affect what is listed. The pages below were read on 3 October 2026, and the table reports only what each page says, not whether the hotel has a generator.

Property What its own page says about generators or Wi-Fi speed
La Carmela de Boracay Describes a beachfront location at Station 2 near the tourist center and lists room categories; no mention of a generator, backup power or Wi-Fi speed3
Henann Crystal Sands Covers room counts, dining venues, pools, gym and beachfront access; no mention of a generator, backup power or Wi-Fi speed4
Mövenpick Resort & Spa Covers rooms, dining, spa and facilities; no mention of a generator, backup power or Wi-Fi speed5

The silence on these pages proves nothing about the buildings. A hotel may well run a generator and not mention it. It does mean that a traveller cannot confirm it from the page, which is why the question has to go to the property.

What you may have heard A common belief is that every large Boracay resort has an automatic generator. No page opened for this article says so for any named hotel, and the only news report that mentions generators describes managers using them during brownouts in 2019, without naming properties or saying how they started6. Treat the belief as unconfirmed for any given hotel.

What the news says

The Sunstar report of 29 September 2019 covered scheduled brownouts from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on four days a week, affecting about 8,000 AKELCO consumers while poles were moved for road widening. It says resort and hotel managers responded by “using generator sets to power up their establishments”6. That is a general statement about 2019, not a list.

The outages since then have been longer than a daytime cut. Boracay was without power for at least 18 hours from 4 to 5 May 20251 and for about two days in September 2025, with restoration at 2:55 p.m. on 15 September2. Those lengths are why the hours question below matters.

What to ask a hotel

Four questions cover what matters. A reply that answers only the first leaves the others open.

  1. Is there a generator? A yes or no for the building where your room is, not for the property in general.
  2. Does it start automatically? Or does staff start it by hand, and how long does that take?
  3. What does it run? Air conditioning in rooms, Wi-Fi, the elevator, water pumps, or only lights and outlets.
  4. For how many hours? What fuel supply the property keeps, and what it does if an outage runs past that.

A message you can send as it stands:

Hello, I am booking a stay from [date] to [date]. Boracay has had long
power outages. Please tell me:
1. Does the property have a backup generator?
2. Does it start automatically when the power goes out?
3. Does it run air conditioning in the rooms, and the Wi-Fi?
4. For how many hours can it run without refuelling?
Thank you.

Ask for the reply in writing, from the hotel’s own address or booking message system, and note the date. The hotel’s own answer to these four questions is the one that counts.
