Boracay Power Outages in 2025 and 2026: What Happened, When and Why

In brief

Two large blackouts hit Boracay in 2025: at least 18 hours on 4-5 May, and about two days on 13-15 September. In 2026 the reported problems were planned line work in January and February, then Visayas grid red alerts and rotating brownouts in July and August.

  • May 2025: from 9:48 p.m. on 4 May to 3:57 p.m. on 5 May, caused by a broken jumper wire at Nabas1.
  • September 2025: the 69 kV line tripped on 13 September; power returned at 2:55 p.m. on 15 September23.
  • December 2025: the overhead bypass line suffered failures attributed to salt spray and wave splash6.
  • February 2026: four planned shutdowns, then the repaired line was energized on 13 February7.
  • July and August 2026: grid red alert and scheduled rotating brownouts across the Visayas; AKELCO was on the August list89.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long was the Boracay blackout in 2025?

At least 18 hours on 4-5 May 20251, and about two days from 13 to 15 September 2025, with restoration times of 12:53 p.m. or 2:55 p.m. on 15 September depending on the source34.

What caused the Boracay blackout in September 2025?

The Nabas-Unidos 69 kV line tripped, and AKELCO traced the fault to arcing in underground cables near the Caticlan Airport arrival area, from moisture intrusion and leakage2.

Is the power in Boracay stable now?

The line rehabilitated by NGCP was energized on 13 February 20267. No source used here reports a new Boracay-wide blackout after that date, but the Visayas grid was under red alert on 8 July and scheduled brownouts were announced for 26 August89.

Is there a website that shows Boracay outages?

No dedicated outage tracker was found. AKELCO’s site shows a daily supply and demand table13.

Do hotels keep the lights on during an outage?

Some may run generators; most hotel sites do not say. See Do Boracay hotels have backup generators?.

The detail

Boracay’s electricity arrives over a single route from the mainland, described in How Boracay gets its electricity. This page lists each outage that dated news coverage reports for 2025 and 2026, what caused it and how long it lasted. It is a record of reported events, not a live status board; the last section names the one official page that publishes any daily figure.

The short answer

If you are… What the record shows
Asking how long a Boracay blackout lasts The two large 2025 events lasted at least 18 hours and about two days13
Asking whether it is fixed A rehabilitated line was energized on 13 February 2026; the 138 kV replacement is unconfirmed711
Planning a stay in the second half of 2026 Visayas grid alerts and rotating brownouts were reported in July and August89

Timeline

Date What happened Reported cause Source
4 May 2025, 9:48 p.m. to 5 May, 3:57 p.m. Aklan, including Boracay, without power for at least 18 hours Broken cut-off jumper wire on the NGCP line at Nabas tripped the 69 kV Nabas-Unidos-Caticlan line 1
13 to 15 September 2025 Boracay, Malay and Buruanga without power; over 20,000 AKELCO customers affected in mid-September Nabas-Unidos 69 kV line tripped at 1:37 p.m. on 13 September; arcing in underground 69 kV cables near the Caticlan Airport arrival area, from moisture intrusion and leakage 235
21 November 2025 NGCP takes over the Caticlan-Unidos 69 kV line from AKELCO ERC reclassification in November 2024 6
December 2025 Recurring outages on the overhead bypass line Water-wave splash and salt-spray corrosion; an alternative bypass further from the shore was due for energization in December 6
27 January, 3, 12 and 13 February 2026 Four planned shutdowns to rehabilitate the line; energized 13 February at 1:31 p.m. Planned work; about 88 percent of identified defects were corrosion-related 7
8 July 2026 Visayas grid red alert, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Boracay not named 2,397 MW available against a 2,492 MW peak 8
26 August 2026 Scheduled rotating brownouts across Visayas, 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.; AKELCO listed among cooperatives 293 MW short; limited generation and limited import from the Mindanao grid 9

Dates and times are as reported. The December 2025 entry gives no count or duration of the interruptions6.

May 2025

The Philstar report of 12 May 2025 gives the clearest account. The 69 kV Nabas-Unidos-Caticlan line tripped at 9:48 p.m. on 4 May, and repairs finished at 3:57 p.m. on 5 May, when the National Electrification Administration said power was fully restored1. Residents posted about the disruption online; one commenter quoted by Philstar said Boracay had been “experiencing brownouts almost every day”, a remark that no source counts or confirms1.

September 2025

This was the longer event. Power to Boracay, Malay and Buruanga was lost from 2:30 p.m. on 13 September, after the line tripped at 1:37 p.m.2. Eight teams from NGCP and AKELCO built an 800-meter temporary overhead line along the airport runway, with clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and security help from the police3. The Department of Tourism said the outage “threatens the reputation of Boracay as one of our premier tourist destinations”4.

Sources disagree Reports differ on when power returned and how long the outage was. Power Philippines and GMA give 2:55 p.m. on Monday, 15 September310. A Power Philippines report on a statement by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry gives 12:53 p.m. as the time AKELCO energized all feeders covering Caticlan and Boracay substations4. Duration is “approximately 2 days” in the GMA report and a “three-day outage” in the Power Philippines headline, which counts the calendar days310. Plan around two full days without grid power for an event of this kind.

Why it keeps happening

The record points to the supply path rather than to demand on the island. The May trip was a broken wire on the mainland side1. The September failure was in underground cable beside the airport2. The December bypass failures and the early-2026 inspection both point to marine corrosion67. NGCP’s 138 kV project is meant to add a second route; it was 93.161 percent complete in April 2026, and no source used here confirms it finished11.

The 2026 grid events are a different cause. At a Senate briefing on 28 May 2026 a capacity shortage of 87 MW on Panay was reported, tied to a forced outage of a 150 MW unit12. The July red alert and the August rotating brownouts were attributed to plants on forced outage and limited imports, and neither GMA report says that Boracay lost power89. Whether Boracay had cuts on 8 July or 26 August is not stated in the sources used here.

What you may have heard Some accounts say Boracay has brownouts “almost every day”. The only source for that in this record is an online commenter quoted by Philstar in May 20251. No source used here counts brownouts across 2025 or 2026. The dated entries above are the events that news reports confirm.

Where to see current notices

AKELCO’s website carries a daily supply and demand outlook table, with megawatts of supply, maximum load demand and the deficit for morning, afternoon and evening. On 3 October 2026 it showed a deficit of 0.71 MW in the morning, 17.14 MW in the afternoon and 12.56 MW in the evening13. How often the table is updated is not stated, and the homepage has no dedicated section for interruption advisories13. NGCP’s Visayas grid alerts are reported by GMA when they are issued, as on 8 July 20268. No crowd-sourced Boracay outage tracker was found.
